If you are new to therapy, I am glad that you are taking the steps in researching this form of self- care to achieve your overall wellness. This process can seem scary at first because it is something new! First time therapy seekers, can be unfamiliar about what therapy actually looks like, and what actually happens behind closed doors. But, don’t worry! We will discuss any questions that you may have.

The thought of sharing your personal life with a stranger, can seem a bit uncertain. I will ensure that before therapy begins you will be well informed regarding what therapy means, looks like, and what therapy is not. When we first meet, I want you to feel welcome and comfortable to ask any questions that you may have.

When you are ready to take a step forward in contacting a therapist, here are a few answered questions:

1. Do they offer a free consultation?

I offer all my clients a free 15 minute consultation before scheduling a first appointment. This session will allow us to meet, allow the client to decide if I am best fit for their needs, and if my scope of practice is best suited for the clients needs.

2. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Talk about goals you have going into therapy and your vision.

This is the first time you are taking toward your journey to self-care. Ask any question that you might have.  I am sure whatever question you might ask  is not  “silly” or “unimportant.” No question is silly or unimportant. I believe in trust, authenticity, and transparency. I have been in therapy myself and remember what it felt like in the beginning.  When you become my client, I will provide a safe and judgment free space that will allow you to be your true self while you gain insight into your concerns that hold you back from happiness and your success.

3. In-Person Vs. Virtual

As a result of the pandemic, many of us have not felt comfortable to leave our homes. To keep practicing social distancing, I am offering virtual sessions. I continue to offer limited in-person sessions. It is up to you, what works best for you and what makes you feel most comfortable.

4.  What is your budget for therapy? What do you feel comfortable paying? Are you planning on using your insurance for payment?

Are you planning to use your health insurance or paying out of pocket? This is something you will have to decide before the first session.

If you are planning to pay out-of-pocket it is important to decide how much you are comfortable paying per month for therapy and what hourly rate is comfortable. If you are going to be a self-pay client, I encourage you to seek around what other therapy rates are around your area. Therapy is not a leisure or a waste of time, it is an investment in yourself. Some therapists offer a sliding scale or reduced rates to accommodate those in need of quality mental health care. Be sure to ask.

If you are planning on using your insurance, take the time to call your insurance and ask if the provider you choose is in-network and if have behavioral health coverage. It is important to remember that most therapists do not make eligibility phone calls and it is up to the client.

5. Self - Check in. How did you feel? Are you ready to book a session?

After your first session, you might have a lot more questions that you might want to ask. That is okay! Take the time to process everything that happened in session. If there is something that was said or something that you forgot to ask, write it down and ask when you meet again. Oftentimes the first session can drive feelings of excitement, release, or confusion. Depending on your therapy goals, it will take a few sessions before you start feeling better. Don’t feel unmotivated if you do not see results that you want right away. Change is not easy and discussing past experiencing takes time. Do not rush the therapeutic process. Therapy takes time and work, but the end result is what matters

These are some frequently asked questions. I hope this helped relieve some of the pressure and nervousness in seeking therapeutic support. Remember, it is normal to feel nervous or uncertain.

If you are ready to make the first call, I AM READY TOO!
